Joe Fernandez
As a child, I have always been fascinated with flight since my first ride in an airliner which was a Cubana Britannia. Growing up I lived near airports and had the chance to see up close a number of historical aircraft thru the years.
I took up aviation photography in the mid-1970s to document these wonderful machines and have a life-long memory of them via images. After possibly well over 1 million shots (Kodachrome, Tri-X, Ektachrome, and digital), I still continue this tradition of taking pictures of planes I come across or set up myself. My technique is simple – like when I did when I shot slide film, Kodachrome to be specific, I set up planes in low optimal sunlight to get the best out of them with minimal shadows.
I also do night shots, artsy formats, and other styles when available. My specialty is in commercial aviation but as long as anything looks good to me, I take the shot. I also host perhaps the last conventions in the USA dedicated to slide collecting and will continue to do so until the interest is completely gone. I’m currently based in the San Antonio-Austin Texas area but available for projects outside the region.
